How agent-to-agent referrals work in California

A referral is simply one licensed agent introducing a client to another licensed agent who works in the market the client is moving to, on agreed terms.

  1. Find an agent in the right market

    Search by city, state, ZIP code or specialty to see agents who work where your client is moving. Every profile shows the agent's brokerage, license type, years licensed, the markets they cover and the referral fee they have published, so you can shortlist before you reach out to anyone.

  2. Agree the referral and the fee

    Referral fees in residential real estate are commonly a percentage of the receiving agent's commission, agreed in writing before the client is introduced. Agents publish the fee they are willing to pay or accept on their profile, so the conversation starts from a known number rather than a negotiation.

  3. Introduce the client

    You make the introduction and the receiving agent takes the client through the transaction in their own market. Because both agents are licensed and working under their own brokerages, the arrangement is between the two brokerages in the ordinary way.

  4. Track it to closing

    Referrals you send and receive live in your dashboard with their status, so an introduction made in March is still findable when it closes in September. Referral fees are settled between the brokerages involved, under whatever agreement they signed.

What is a real estate agent referral network?

It is a directory of licensed agents who are willing to send and receive client referrals across markets. When a client is moving somewhere you do not work, you find an agent who does, agree a referral arrangement with them, and introduce the client. WeReferAgents lists agents nationwide by city, state and specialty so the search step does not depend on who you happen to already know.

How much does it cost to join?

What referral fee is normal?

In United States residential real estate a referral fee is usually a percentage of the receiving agent's commission, most commonly in the 20-35% range, agreed in writing before the introduction. It is not fixed by anyone and is negotiable on every referral. Agents on this site publish the fee they work with on their own profile, so you can see it before you make contact. WeReferAgents does not set, collect or take a share of referral fees -- they are settled between the brokerages involved.
